Downwind sailing: Average speed is about 11.5 kts, with long periods at 12 – 13 kts and top speed of the day at 14 kts. This is under (reefed?) main and solent only as the only kite is 100 m² and has never been used yet.

Sail handling: The mainsail is rather easy to sheet in and influences a lot the speed / behaviour of the yacht (to be tested in lighter winds). The solent is really powerful and the size 44 primary winch, which looked a bit too big at first sight, are actually really needed. The jib clew can be fully trimmed in 3D with three control lines, two of them having a 6:1 ratio. The mast is rather stiff, with a rod lateral rigging estimated a bit too thin by M Lombard. The mainsail luff is fitted with cars on a track. (With a 2:1 main halyard, hoisting it is no problem)
Cockpit: The helmsman really has the best spot onboard, with proper support from the adjustable toe rail, located fairly forward in the cockpit, close to the primary winches. Another proper toe rail located further back would be welcome for the crew who miss a bit of support. A step should be added in front of the companion way hatch so as to be at the right height to use the pit winches. The roof overhang should be reduced of a few centimetres to enable the use of a long winch handle on the primaries.
Steering: The helm and the boat seem nicely balanced. One can effectively control the yacht. Never felt in a bad position.
Global Comments: When walking on deck, one can really feel the boat is strong and structurally stiff. The inside feels really big with no major obstacles in the saloon. A lot of volume… N°2 is due for end of March while n°3 going to mini sailor Bruno Sottovia is due at the end of April (in the Med).
Conclusion: We were really eager to sail on the first 9.50 to validate the concept of a fun, fast, lively and versatile yacht: this first trial is a success. We are satisfied and it seems like a lot of other sailors will find in the 9.50 the ideal match to their needs.
Romain Vidal.
